Saturday Night Live November 22nd, 1980.
Last week I went to the Paley Center For Media, where they have an amazing TV library, and watched the second episode of the 1980-1981 season of SNL. This was the season after Lorne Michaels left, and most of these episodes are never shown on re-runs.
Some highlights.
- A pun filled sketch called Serf City where two British lords surf on the backs of serfs — get it? (Example line: if the serf is bad we’ll hang ten).
- Charlie Rocket hosting weekend update. When no one laughed at one of the punchlines, he reread it, assuming the audience didn’t hear it — the audience continued to not laugh.
- Gilbert Gottfried.
- Charlie Rocket using the n-word in a sketch about “commie hunting.” Very uncomfortable.
- A moloko milk commercial in the style of A Clockwork Orange, paid for by the milk association of America. Eh.
- The Leather Weather Report. The name says it all.
